Walter Ferguson lifted in full power meets from 1975 to 1985 before suffering a near fatal blood clut in his leg. His best lifts included a 584 pound squat, 407 pound bench press, and 617 pound deadlift all done in the 242 lb class without the use of supportive gear. Walter resumed his lifting career In the early 1990's. Although he was unable to lift in full power meets he did lift in bench press competitions for nearly 20 years.

Walter's first inspiration came from his father, the late Ray Ferguson, a strongman and Olympic lifter.
